Hi

Simo Boukal (real name Mohammed Oualidi) is a famous moroccan surfer, one of the first surfing athletes in his country. His love for surfing began when he was a small kid and went on through his life of a famous athlete winning 10 times the Moroccan Champion title. The ocean has been always a space where he could express himself and where he could escape. Today, as an experienced coach and teacher, he passes his love for surfing to other people.

Born in Rabat, he was given a name Mohammed Oualidi. Growing up in Rabat, living in the house near the beach, everyday he watched the neighbours going to surf. One day, at the age of 9, instead of going to school he went to the beach to watch the surfers from a far distance. After couple of days he went to the beach again and asked the surfers to let him try to surf. They gave him a board and left him alone. Simo still remembers the incredible feeling of getting up on the wave for the first time. Since that moment every couple of days intead of going to school he went to the beach to surf, keeping it in secret from his parents.

YOUTH

With a group of 5 other friends, he purchased together a first bodyboard and later a surfboard. The boys were learning surfing by themselves, watching others, surfing on the board one after another.

With time Simo improved a lot and started to take part in local and national competitions across the Morroccan surfcoast. He became a strong junior athlete winning national cups, becoming junior Moroccan Champion 4 times.

SENIOR

When he grew up, as a senior, he took part in many local, national and international contests. He won Moroccan Championships 6 times. In 1998 he went to Portugal for World Championships with Moroccan national team. He finished 56th competing with about 200 other surfers from all over the world. By that time he didn’t even have his own surfboard.
One year later, in 1999, at the age of 25, he won his first own board by taking the first place in surfcontest in Moroccan Casa.
Simo has been one the first sponsored Moroccan surfathletes surfing for portuguese Energia Tropical, spanish SAL and italian Scorpion Bay. He has been surfing with other athletes such as Michel  Bourez, Dino Andino, Mick Campbell, Manga Barry or Vasco Ribeira.
After finishing his senior sport career he competes in master category, still taking places on the podium.
He became a coach of many young surfers – improving their technique, supporting during competitions. Today the best of them compete in european contests and world cups.
In his free time he enjoys sufing the waves along the moroccan coastline. He has a gypsy soul and needs to move around, loving the ocean, the beach, the nature and animals, especially dogs. Surfing with his dog on a board made him happy as well as all the kids from his club in Rabat.
